Guidelines For Securing Your Home and Possessions

Keeping one's self, personal property and belongings safe is a top priority. For this reason, it's very important to have dependable locks, keys and safes. Locks should be sturdy and secure, safes must be durable and impenetrable. Hi, my name is Matthew and my interest in locks and safes started when I began hearing news reports about an increase of burglaries in my city. Before beginning to secure my home and possessions, I spoke with an experienced locksmith who lives nearby. I also searched online to learn everything I could about the various types of security devices, safes, locks and keys. After securing my home and valuables, I now feel very safe. I am writing this blog to share my information with others so they can be safe in their homes too.

Keep Your Home Safe: 3 Simple Ways To Improve Your Home Security

When it comes to your home, you want to make sure it's as secure as possible. That means you need to add a few security measures. Luckily, you don't need to spend a lot of money. In fact, there are some low-tech, low-cost ways to protect your home and your family. Here are three simple steps you can take to upgrade your home security.

Bring on the Dogs

When burglars are scoping out a neighborhood for potential victims, they're more likely to choose a home that doesn't have a dog, especially big dogs. That doesn't mean you need to go out and purchase a dog. However, it does mean that you should give the appearance of having a big dog on the property. A simple way to get burglars to pass by your home is to make your yard look like you own a big dog. First, place a dog house in your backyard. Second, place a large food dish on your back porch. Finally, set a well-placed "Beware of dog" sign in your front yard. Burglars aren't going to take the chance of coming face-to-face with a large dog. They're going to look for another house.

Upgrade the Locks

If it's been a while since you changed the locks on your home, it's time to take care of that. Traditional key locks are easy to pick. All a burglar will need is a lock picking set that they can purchase online. Have a locksmith come out to your home and replace your outdated locks with new alphanumeric keypad locks. These locks require an alphanumeric code for entry, which means it will be more difficult for a burglar to gain access to your home.

Remove the Hiding Places

Look around the perimeter of your home. If you have large bushes growing under your windows, or near your entry doors, you're inviting burglars into your home. Those large bushes will provide the perfect hiding places for burglars as they break into your doors and windows. For maximum protection, you should remove the bushes from around the perimeter of your home – especially under your windows. Replace your bushes with low-lying ground cover, and motion-sensor security lights. Installing motion-sensor lights will ensure that your windows are illuminated throughout the night.
